Guided Walk: The Dales Way - Detailed Itinerary
Ilkley To Grassington – 17 Miles/27.5km
The well-heeled market town of Ilkley is an excellent place to begin this classic British walking adventure. It is also ideal to visit the famous Betty's Cafe to treat yourself to a cream tea or two to prepare for the way ahead. Crossing the River Wharfe via the attractive Old Bridge we soon reach woodlands and flat meadows. The route meanders along the river past Addingham village. The trail crosses further meadows before reaching beautiful Bolton Abbey village and the remains of the 12th century Bolton Priory that has influenced the work of Wordsworth and Turner, perched majestically above the river. Ascend the woods to reach the narrow gorge at The Strid. The trail now passes Barden Bridge and the 15th century hunting lodge of Barden Tower past Appletreewick and Burnsall. Stride through woodland and meadows to our nights accommodation at the very attractive tourist town of Grassington, well served by quality pubs and restaurants.
Grassington To Hubberholme – 13 Miles/21km
Walk uphill through the quaint cobbled streets of Grassington to rejoin the route about a mile from town. Passing through a pretty valley, the trail bypasses Kilnsey Crag, a favourite haunt of rock-climbers who test their skills on the limestone cliffs. Enjoy the classic Dales scenery of barns, fields and drystone walls before reaching the fetching village of Kettlewell. The trail continues to accompany the River Wharfe, with excellent sections of limestone pavement to enjoy, through fragrant woodland to the village of Buckden. The Dales village of Hubberholme, our nights accommodation is two miles upstream and features excellent food options and an atmospheric church to enjoy.
Hubberholme To Dentdale – 14 miles/22 km
Leaving Hubberholme, the trail follows the Langstrothdale Valley, still with the company of the River Wharfe which is now getting smaller as we head towards it's source past the farmsteads of Deepdale and Beckermonds. Climbing slightly, we pass Cam Woods and set foot on the historic Cam High Road, built by the Romans on their advance northwards. The valley now opens up to reveal fantastic panoramic views of Ingleborough and Whernside and offers an opportunity to stride out to Dent Head and the Dent Head railway viaduct, a grand example of Victorian engineering unusual in such a rural setting. Dentdale provides our accommodation for the night and offers more classic undulating Dales scenery to reward walkers for their endeavours.
Dentdale To Sedbergh – 13 miles/21km
The trail descends through the Dentdale Valley, offering great walking combined with wonderful Yorkshire Dales scenery. We meander through meadows and woodland to the quaint and unspoilt village of Dent. With it's cobbled streets, fine church, cosy pubs and quaint shops it is the archetypal Dales village. From Dent, descend gently to the River Dee and enjoy beautiful riverbank walking. The trail continues through more meadows with pretty hedgerows and along quiet lanes complete with drystone walls. There is one final hill before dropping down into the town of Sedbergh, our nights accommodation. Sedbergh is a busy market town, not without it's charm, and provides several cosy pubs to celebrate reaching the end of the Yorkshire Dales and the beginning of the outstanding Lake District.
Sedburgh To Burneside – 17 miles/27.5km
The Dales Way leaves Sedburgh following the River Rawthey and then the River Lune through the gently rolling and picturesque Eden Valley. After enjoying several fragrant meadows with some fine viaducts to view, the trail reaches the handsome Crook Of Lune Bridge. Crossing the bridge marks the end of the Dales and the Lake District now beckons. After three miles of undulating farmland the route reaches Grayrigg Foot, with more gentle walking to the small lake of Black Moss Tarn. The final section of today's walk through fields criss-crossed with stone walls leads to the quiet village of Burneside and your nights accommodation.
Burneside To Bowness-On-Windermere - 10 miles/16km
Leaving Burneside, the route meanders along the pretty River Kent, to the pleasant village of Staveley which is a good stop for refreshments. The trail passes farmland before rising steeply past Hag End Farm. The reward is your first spectacular panoramic view of the Lake District mountains. The route undulates through farmland once more until Brant Fell, whereupon we can enjoy the satisfying sight of Lake Windermere. A plaque marks the end of this spectacular walk and a drop down into Bowness-On-Windermere leads to your nights accommodation. Why not celebrate your accomplishment with a trip on beautiful Lake Windermere in the iconic setting of the Lake District, a fitting end to your walk.
